ABUJA – THE House of Representatives, next Tuesday, will debate a motion that seeks to immortalise the late former First Lady, Mrs. Maryam Babangida by re-naming the National Centre for Women Development, NCWD, Abuja after her.
Meanwhile, the House of Representatives Committee Chairman on Defence, Oluwole Oke, said Late Maryam Babangida worked assiduously during her life time to ensure that Nigerian women were accorded due respect and dignity of motherhood.
The motion to be moved by Hon. Elizabeth Ogbaga (PDP/Ebonyi), is in recognition of her role in influencing government to take the issue of women, children and the under privileged seriously.
Ogbaga, a member of House Committee on Women Affairs, said in her proposed motion made available to Vanguard, that Maryam had actually built the NCWD in 1990 and was named Maryam Babangida Centre for Women Development but was later changed to NCWD in 1996 by late Gen. Sani Abacha when he was military leader.
