ENUGUâ€”FOR attempting to kidnap a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, Chief Godwin Ezeuko, seven persons including a lady, are now in police net in Enugu.
Police detectives from the Enugu Police Command arrestedÂ the seven suspects while trying to abduct the legal practitioner from a hotel in the New Haven area of Enugu.
Four of the suspects including a female are members of one family from Amurri Community in Nkanu West Local Government Area but residing in Agbani town.Â The police gave their names as Ndidiamaka Nwafor a.k.a Ezenwanyi, Friday Nwafor, Iloabuchi Nwafor and Monday Nwafor. Others are Obinna Maduabuchi said to be the initiator of the lawyerâ€™s kidnap, Chukwujekwu Okafor and Emeka Nwankwo.
The police also arrested three members of an armed robbery gang, which attacked motorists at Agboneri Awgu along Enuguâ€“Port Harcourt Expressway,Â Tuesday evening and dispossessed them of various sums of money, GSM handsets and other valuables at gunpoint.
The State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mohammed Zarewa, while parading the suspects at the police headquarters, Enugu yesterday, said that the suspected kidnappers were rounded up at the hotel, where they had agreed to meet with the lawyer but unknown to them, he had reported the illicit activities of the gang to the police.
He said that the police detectives, who laid ambush for them within the hotel premises, succeeded in apprehending the kidnappers, when some of them drove to the place to abduct the lawyer.
According to him, other members of the gang were apprehended at Agbani following confessional statements by their colleagues, adding that they would be arraigned in court, after investigations into the matter had been concluded.
Some of the suspects including Ezenwanyi, however, denied any involvement in the crime, saying they were being punished unjustly for an offence they knew nothing about.
