LAGOS—Senator Annie Okonkwo, representing Anambra Central, has described late wife of former Head of State, Mrs. Maryam Babangida, as a woman of uncomplicated civility, who by selfless engagements gained intense affection from the rural poor and open approval even from the elites.
Okonkwo, in a statement issued in Lagos, noted that “the death of Maryam, a woman of colour and grace though irretrievable, the scar of her death is rendered blunt by the unanimous affection Nigerians have continued to show to her person and legacy even in transition.”
The Senator added that “such determination throws a positive challenge to our ably endowed Nigerian women to strive to utilize their opportunities to define their impact.”
Senator Okonkwo, however, appealed to Nigerians to wake up to the dangers our unrestrained conducts impact on the environment.
Meanwhile, the Senator took time off to also congratulate the Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuade on his 80th birthday celebration. He described the Ooni as a cultural icon whose socio-cultural entrepreneurship have more than any living Yoruba monarch earned them elevated remarks across the globe.
He prayed God to grant him many more years and the Babangidas, the strength to persist in the character of their departed mother.
