Ogun: Crisis deepens as Elders’ Forum floats parallel exco

By Kolade Larewaju
THE crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Ogun State has further deepened as the State Elders Forum has set up a parallel state Executive Council with Chief Semiu Sodipo as Chairman and Prince Dayo Adebayo as Secretary.

Describing the present Executive of the party as illegal, the Elders said they resolved to establish a State Secretariat where the activities of the party would henceforth be resolved.

The Elders in a statement after the party’s stakeholders meeting said the decision was taken as a result of the protracted nature of the factional crisis rocking the party which appeared intractable.

Signed by the new Chairman, Secretary, Vice-Chairman; Chief Dele Odulaja and Publicity Secretary; Chief Babatunde Fadun respectively, the statement said “in view of the seemingly difficulty and protracted nature of the effort of the national secretariat to resolve the political logjam with Governor Daniel’s faction of the party in the state, the Elders Forum in the interest of equity, fairness and peaceful co-existence within the state, is constrained to adopt the results of the parallel congresses held throughout the state in February, 2008.

“These results have been held in abeyance in view of the report from the Monitoring Committee from the National Secretariat which invalidated the congresses.

“Having considered the present PDP party Exco from Ward to State level as illegal, the elders/stakeholders of the party at the state level have resolved to have a state secretariat where the activities of the party will henceforth be coordinated by the party executive that are statutorily recognized under the PDP constitution.

“The congress is of the opinion that all actions pertaining to the emergence of governorship candidate by the illegal PDP state executive committee be stopped and all party members that are interested in vying for the post of Ogun State Governor should await directives and guidelines from the National Executive Committee of the party in compliance with the PDP constitution

“Congress came up with a resolution not opposing the aspirations of the people of Ogun West Senatorial District for the governorship of the state. Our sincere position is to await the guidelines of the party to enable us resolve the issue collectively as opposed to the one man show in Governor Daniel’s faction.”

The elders commended the State lawmakers for reviewing the plans of Governor Daniel to raise N50 billion bond, noting that an outgoing governor should limit itself to available resources and not go borrowing.
