The incompetence of coach Shaibu Amodu’s technical crew was brought to the fore in Angola when Eaglesâ€™ striker Obafemi Martins made a sudden departure to Germany to seek treatment for his injured right shin.
Obafemi was a major doubt for the tournament after he had surgery to repair his damaged shin in November, but coach Amodu against public opinionÂ insisted on including him in the team after the team doctors certified him fit to play when he joined the Eaglesâ€™ camp in Durban, South Africa. Obafemi underwent surgery to repair the damage to his shin in November, after he scored two goals that helped Nigeria qualify for the World Cup.
The coaches juggled between the choice of Obafemi, Chinedu Ogbuke Obasi and Mike Eneramo. The Esperence of Tunisia striker was eventually dropped to make way for Obafemi.
Ogbuke-Obasi was initially on chop board, but he impressed in a friendly game against a local South African club side. Amodu eventually dropped Eneramo.
His first choice, Obafemi, has not kicked a ball in Angola. He was on the bench for the game against Egypt on Tuesday and he did not train yesterday with the team after complaining of pain in his right shin.
Obafemi, it was gathered returned to Germany to seek relief and would be back to Angola on time for Saturday group C game against Benin Republic.
