Nigerians want to hear from you, AC tells Yar’Adua

LAGOS—The Action Congress, AC, has expressed delight at the news that President Umaru Yar’Adua’s health has improved so much that he could talk on the phone with some key government officials and top lawmakers.

In a statement issued in Lagos yestersday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party, however, said the President should go a step further by talking to Nigerians whom, it said, would like to hear directly from him to assure them that he is indeed recovering.

Relatedly, a group that describes itself Jubilee Group, has demanded that the President should step down latest this weekend, saying it is because of his absence that Nigeria is grouped among rogue nations of terrorists.

Mr President must speak directly to Nigerians

According to Alhaji Lai Mohammed, “It is good that President Yar’Adua has spoken to Vice President Goodluck Jonathan, Senate President, David Mark and House Speaker, Dimeji Bankole. But these people do not constitute Nigeria, they are not the ones who voted him into office. The President must speak directly to the remaining 149,999,997 Nigerians, using the dated video recording format that we suggested in our earlier statement on Monday.

“Alternatively, the President could also do a live phone-in to the NTA or Radio Nigeria to enable him speak directly to his compatriots and convince them of his increasing well-being,  instead of the current situation where the people have to depend on confused spin doctors to get an update on the health of their President, who has been away for over 44 days.

“Besides, some of these people the President was said to have spoken with are no longer credible in the eyes of Nigerians, since they have given a lot of inaccurate information on the issue of the President’s illness, including that they have been in touch with him when we are aware they have not,” AC said.

The party repeated its earlier assertion that the health of the country’s first citizen is too important to be toyed with, and demanded a daily update on the President’s recovery in Saudi Arabia.

Jubilee Group wants Yar’Adua to hand-over to VP

Meantime, the ranks of those calling on ailing President Umaru Yar’Adua to temporarily handover to Vice President Goodluck Jonathan increased yesterday as a group that calls itself Jubilee Group, demanded that the President should step down latest this weekend, saying it is because of his absence that Nigeria is grouped among rogue nations of terrorists.

Similarly, the group called on Nigerians to organise themselves at their various local governments across the country and write a letter to the National Assembly through their representatives or senators, asking them to move a motion to that effect.

Jubilee Group which said its name was derived from the nation’s coming 50th independence anniversary, speaking through former presidential spokesman Dr. Doyin Okupe, stated  that the situation in the country today could no longer be left in the hands of elected politicians alone.

Dr. Okupe who briefed journalists in Lagos declared that it was obvious President Yar’Adua could no longer continue in office on account of his health and called on both the Federal Executive Council, the National Assembly as well as political leaders in the country to act now in the nation’s interest.
