Nigeria is favoured to host the African senior wresthing championship holding in the first quarter of the year. President of the Nigeria amateur wresting federation Chief Austin Edeze revealed this in Lagos during a recent facility inspection tour of the National Stadium, Surulere and the Teslim Balogun Stadium Lagos.
Chief Edeze who was on the facility inspection visit with the president of the Confederation of African Wrestling Association (CAWA) ,. Ibnou Zahir Mohammed from morocco and Federation of International wrestling Association technical official Dier favour from France said though Nigeria has Egypt and Algeria to contend with in the battle for the hosting right, Nigeria is greatly favoured to host.
Expressing his optimism on Nigeriaâ€™s hosting chances; the president said no black Nation has hosted this championship since 1960. And if wee succeed, Nigeria will be on record as the first black nation to host the event.
Nigeria was able to win a bronze medal last at the world championship in Demark through Chioma Iheanacho thus making it her first world medal to be won since 1974.
He also informed that hosting the event in Nigeria will further enhance the development of wrestling within the sub_region. It will also encourage a large participation since most of the West African countries that may not have the money to go to Egypt or Algeria, would like to participate if Nigeria is hosting.
With kaduna, Abuja, Yenegoa and Lagos as the four cities jostling to host the event if Nigeria is eventually awarded the hosting right, Chief Edeze said he wants Lagos to host the championship due to the existence of abundant manpower and to the availability of standard facilities.
