Eagles coach, Shaibu Amodu, said in Durban, South Africa, that all the players that made the list to the Angola 2010 Nations Cup got their team slots on merit.
“What I have chosen for Nigeria is the best squad capable of bringing the cup back home. Any player who finds his name in the squad got there by merit,†said Amodu as the team prepared to fly to Angola to square up against Egypt in their group C opener on January 12.
Amodu said that the team aim to have a good start with a win against Egypt, adding that the Eagles are ready for the match.
“That match will go a long way in putting things right for us. The Egyptians, as defending champions, will come out smoking but we will match them grit for grit.â€
Egypt will be missing Mohammed Aboutrika and Amir Zaki, but Amodu insists that even if such key players were available for Egypt, Nigeria would be able to defeat them and then go all the way at the showpiece.
“My optimism is not based on their injured players, but injury is part of the game and I feel sorry for them,†he added.
“With or without Mohammed Aboutrika and other injured players, I have a squad that can cause upsets and go all the way to the final. I have raised the confidence of the team and they are equal to the task ahead.
