Follow constitution, say Clark, Saraki

By Chris Ochayi

ABUJA—The Northern Union and South Souh Elders and Leaders Forum have jointly asked the National Assembly to authorise Vice President Goodluck Jonathan to become Acting President without further delay.  The forum, which took the decision at the end of a joint meeting, in Abuja yesterday, asked the National Assembly to urgently apply the provision of Section 145 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

According to the statement jointly signed by Dr. Olusola Saraki and Chief Edwin Clark, Leaders of the Northern Union and the South South Elders and Leaders Forum respectively, “the provisions of Section 145 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria which clearly contemplates the Vice president to act as the President in the absence of the latter do not foreclose the President assuming his office upon recovery.
“Consequently, the Vice President should be authorised to act as the President by the National Assembly in fulfilment of the said section(s) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The groups also “frowned at some elements of the political class who are attempting to capitalise on the unfortunate circumstance of Mr. President to derail the democratic processes which the country has laboured to enthrone and sustain over the years”.

“As a democracy, the country is governed according to concrete norms, processes, structures and institutions which essence is to guarantee equity, justice, fairness and good governance. Parts of the resolutions of the “forum was to also advice all those who are scrumptiously working to derail the gains of our democracy that the provisions of he 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria remains the sovereign authority to which all Nigerians and residents in Nigeria submit.”
