Etsako re-run: Oshiomhole hails FG

BENIN—Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, has praised the Federal Government for creating an enabling environment for a free and fair House of Assembly re-run election in Etsako Central Local Government area.

The governor spoke to reporters shortly after the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) returning officer in Etsako Central, Glenn Ukomadu, declared the Action Congress candidate, Mr Johnson Egwakhide Oghuma, winner of the election with 7,884 votes.

According to the governor, “I want to appreciate the federal government for creating an enabling environment for the freest and fairest election in the history of our state.

“I sincerely appreciate President Umaru Yar’Adua and Vice President Goodluck Jonathan for giving a clear message that the federal government is not interested in election rigging and for giving a clear directive to the Police and INEC to do a thorough job.”

The governor insisted that he was more interested in the process of the election rather than the result, and gave kudos to the electorate for waiting patiently in the heat to cast their votes without noise or fighting.

“For me, it was more of celebrating the process,” said Oshiomhole, who also praised the Police and INEC for doing a thorough job by providing adequate security and resisting the pressures by those who wanted to tamper with the outcome of the election.”

He said: “It was more of celebrating the Police. I congratulate the AIG, Felix Ogbaudu, and his men for doing a fantastic job.

“Today, we saw an AIG, commissioner of police, going to the hinterland to monitor the election. Today, I am proud of my country, I am proud of the process.”

Taking a swipe at the PDP, the governor said “Dan Orbih said the election was between Oshiomhole and the PDP. Now, the PDP and Oshiomhole have gone to battle and the winner has emerged.

“The issues are settled, we have gone to the classroom and I scored an A and the old man scored zero.

“For those few people who still felt that the ‘godfather’ is invincible, today, those issues are settled and the godfather has been buried by the people themselves.

“I feel fulfilled that God has used me to demystify these people and enabled our people gain confidence in the power of their vote.”
