BENIN—The Inpdependent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Edo State has fixed 23 January 2010 for the  re-run election into Etsako Central constituency seat in Edo State House of Assembly.
A statement in Benin yesterday by the Administrative Secretary of the commission, Mr. Gilbert Okolocha, said the election would hold between 8am and 3pm in all the polling units of the constituency on the said date.
It would be recalled that INEC yesterday denied speculations making the rounds in the state that it had fixed the election for the 16 January 2010.
According to him, four political parties, including Action Congress (AC), All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), Democratic Peoples Party (DPP) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will participate in the re-run election.
Vanguard recalls that the Court of Appeal sitting in Benin had last December upheld the judgment of the lower tribunal which nullified the election of Chris Umogbai of the Peoples Democratic Party.
The court also ordered Umogbai to vacate the seat and directed that INEC conducts a fresh election into the constituency seat within 45 days.
In a related development, INEC is to meet with state chairmen, secretaries, candidates, local government party chairmen and two officials each of the parties taking part in the election on 12 January, 2010.
Besides, the commission would organize a stakeholder’s conference on the 19th January at Etsako Central local government area, the Administrative Secretary of the Commission has disclosed.
