ASABA—COUNCILLORS in Ndokwa East local government council of Delta State have impeached the Chairman of the council, Mr. Chike Ugwummadu, over alleged failure to account for money expended on Christmas gifts.
They are also accusing him of failure to render account of income and expenditure for September to December 2009 as stipulated by law.
Already, the impeachment is causing uneasy calm in the area, as the feuding councillors have addressed an impeachment notice to the State House of Assembly.
The notice was endorsed by the Leader and Clerk of the House, Messrs Shadrack Opiah and Igwe Francis and fifteen councillors out of the twenty members in the House.
The council chairman was also accused of not following due process in the award of contracts; operating outside the 2009 budget and faling to honour the House invitation on three occasions.
Leader of the House, Mr. Opiah, who stormed Vanguard’s office at the weekend, said since the councillors have raised the impeachment notice “the chairman be placed on suspension by Delta House of Assembly pending the outcome of investigation of the state lawmakers in line with the lawâ€.
Efforts to speak to the chairman proved abortive, but a close aide, who pleaded anonymity, dismissed the allegations as false.
“Let them come and prove them before the world. Is it Christmas rice they are crying for?†The chairman’s aide queried.
