By Emmanuel Aziken

ABUJA—The forthcoming gubernatorial election in Anambra State must not be a do-or- die affair, President Umaru Yar‘Adua has been quoted as saying.

Senator Polycarp Nwite, Senior Special Assistant to the President (Political Matters) in a statement yesterday quoted the President as calling on all stakeholders and government agencies involved in the conduct of the election to be fair in their conduct, saying it must not be a do-or-die affair.

“President Umaru Yar’Adua is calling on all stakeholders in Anambra State politics, especially the candidates and their teeming supporters to be of good conduct in a manner that will engender free, fair and credible election,” Nwite said  in a statement by his media adviser, Mr. Edward Dibiana.

“Mr. President abhors politics of impunity, intimidation and any such factors that may elicit rancour, violence and avoidable controversy that would cast slur on our efforts as a nation to get it right”.

The president therefore, urges every Nigerian not to view the election as a do-or-die affair, as he has directed every government agency involved in the process of the election to ensure a level playing field for all the candidates, irrespective of party affiliation, and also a conducive environment for the voters to perform their civic duties freely, without fear of intimidation.

The presidential aide further affirmed that mischief makers and people with questionable agenda in the coming election will not be tolerated as government has resolved to use every lawful means to check the activities of such persons and also bring them to book.
