The revelation last week of the police arresting a trailer load of alleged unauthorised electoral materials in Okija, Anambra State, less than three weeks to the gubernatorial poll in the state, has continued to attract reactions, with Senator Annie Okonkwo, calling for a proper investigation into the matter.
Okonkwo, representing Anambra Central Federal Constituency, wondered what the bizarre discovery would portend for the county’s fledgling democracy.
He insisted that those behind the acquisition, transportation and protection of the electoral materials, which included ballot boxes, ballot papers, and result sheets, must be exposed for what they are, irrespective of how highly placed they may be.
He querried why the State Electoral Commissioner, SEC, in Anambra State, Mr Uwazuruonye Josiah, has remained silent on such a critical national cum political matter, which is capable of creating problems for the country’s democracy. He demanded that the security agencies, who had started on a good note should strive and apprehend the fleeing trailer carrying the second container and its driver.
It will be recalled that policemen at a checkpoint in Okija in Anambra State, in a bid to unravel the cause of a slight accident involving two vehicles along Onitsha- Owerri Road, early last week, discovered on the trailer involved, a container of electoral materials, which the driver claimed was being freighted to Port – Harcourt.
But in the process of the exercise, a second truck containing the same consignment successfully fled the scene.
With the Anambra State governorship election in the corners, Senator Okonkwo, wondered if this development would not push people into taking laws into their own hands.
