Amuneke: Eagles have nothing to offer

By Ben Efe
Former Eagles striker and Ocean Boys of Bayelsa coach, Emmanuel Amuneke, said that the national team doing battle in Angola are ‘soulless’ and they face a first round exit from the tournament.

AmunikeAmuneke who is the hero of the 1994 triumph in Tunisia argued that there was no cohesion in the team and the coaches have done so little to have a close knit unit.

“Before the tournament, I did say that football has changed from what it used to be. It no longer thrives on individual skills but team work.

“We have no team work and I was not surprised by the loss,” said Amuneke. He said that in the Eagles’ next game against the Squirrels of  Benin Republic, anything could happen as there are no easy games and the Eagles must have to readjust to meet up with the challenge otherwise they would be out.

The Eagles squandered a one goal lead against the highly mobile Egyptians and slumped to a 3-1 defeat in their opening game on Tuesday. The result did not come as shock to Nigerian fans. Coach Shaibu Amodu as usual blamed the defeat on the players.

“My players let their heads drop. They lost their character and against a team like Egypt, you need to be mentally strong. We were not and we got punished for it.”
