UMUAHIA—GOVERNOR Theodore Orji of Abia has directed the chairmen of the 17 councils in the state to hand over to the Head of Service in their respective councils.
Orji gave the directive at a farewell dinner in honour of the chairmen in Umuahia.
The Governor said the state government would off-set the debts owed by the local governments to their workers.
He commended the chairmen for the cordial relationship they had with the state government but regretted the inability of some of them to pay their workers’ salaries.
Orji attributed the situation to the employment of workers by some council chairmen without approval. According to him, such chairmen subjected themselves to unnecessary pressures from politicians and their associates.
The Governor commended the chairmen for their initiative to introduce e-payment system in the local governments, which had reduced the incidence of ghost workers. Responding on behalf of others, the chairman of Ikwuano Local Government Area, Mr Stanley Ojigbo, thanked the Governor for the opportunity given to them to serve their respective councils.
