26m Nigerians, illiterate, says Minister

By Chris Ochayi

ABUJA— The Federal Government has declared that there are about 25,618,185 illiterate adults in the country, which has heightened the fears the country may not achieve the Education For All, EFA, target by the year 2015.

The Minister of State for Education, Hajiya Aishatu Jibril Dukku who disclosed this at the state launch of the 2009 Global EFA Week celebration in Gombe, Gombe State, weekend, explained  that 9,556,703 of the number are male while 16,061,482 are female representing about 37.3% and 62.7% respectively.

Hajiya Dukku who noted that adult literacy is a key to achieving EFA as literate adults rarely raise illiterate children, stressed that “many governments have paid little or insufficient attention to youth and adult learning need.  Many Countries do not have literacy programmes that capture adults and youths who have not had the opportunity to learn how to read and write.”
