BENIN—EDO State government yesterday disclosed that it has awarded contract for provision of pipe borne water for over 101 communities across the 18 local government areas of the state.
The State Commissioner for Energy and Water Resources, Mr. Alex Okoh, who disclosed this while addressing a stakeholders’ meeting on the 2008 CGS/MDGS Water projects, said that with the successful execution of the projects, the prevalence of water borne diseases in the rural communities would be reduced to its barest minimum.
He said: “The CGS/MDGs projects is a partnership programme between the state and Federal Government.
“It is targeted at the development of rural communities faced with the problems of basic infrastructures needed to meet the minimum standard of living in the selected communities.
“It is very pertinent to state that the government has chosen the provision of potable water, particularly in the rural communities, as one of its priority projects.
“This has become necessary due to the fact that inhabitants in many rural communities walk several kilometers to get to their source of water supply, usually from stream of doubtful qualities.
“Therefore, the affected communities would be able to live in a clean and healthy environment which invariably results in the reduction in the mortality rate.â€
