Elder statesman, Ambassador Maitama Sule has urged Nigerians to stop the search for Yar†Adua’s successor because the trend is becoming ridiculous and both Christianity and Islam abhor it. Speaking with Saturday Vanguard through the telephone , the elder statesman solicited for caution.
“It is against our culture as black people, as Christians and Muslims, the two great religions to rejoice over the illness or death of somebody. It is against the teachings of the two great religions and no culture in Nigeria permits it.
“We should pray for the health of Mr. President. We should stop looking for his successor or rejoicing over the situation. It is unbecoming.â€
Although the elder statesman acknowledges that the concern for the country under the present circumstances is necessary , he advises that “we should be concerned about the country but we should also be concerned about the health of Mr. President and pray for him.
We should rather pray for him than looking for his replacement or his successor. Nigerians should remember God at this time and turn to him in prayer. There is nothing political about this.â€
Asked his opinion on the Vice -President holding sway while the President was taking treatment, he advises that the Constitution be followed to the letter.
“We should look at the Constitution and abide by it. Whatever the Constitution says is what we should abide by. We should do away with wishful thinking or things that are not according to the letters of the Constitution because sincerely speaking, I’m surprised at the level some Nigerians have taken this.
I pray for the President’s recovery. But it seems some Nigerians don’t understand that life and death both belong to God, just like health and illness. There are people who may be sick for a long time but they survive. There are others who don’t get ill before they die. Anybody can get sick. Anybody can die.
“And we should realise that sickness or good health, everybody has an appointed time.
“People should stop looking to the left or to the right. Whatever should be done must not be outside the letters of the Constitution. People should stop running around, looking for Yar’Adua’s successor. I don’t support it.I am an elder statesman.
I am speaking to the nation. I am not addressing any particular group, I am not a member of any political party.â€
We should stop the hues and the cries over Yar’Adua’s successor. I am a Nigerian and I’m asking the people of Nigeria to pray for the health of Mr. President. Stop shopping for his successorâ€.
