ENUGUâ€”The traditional ruler of Elugwu la Nkpokolo in Oji River Local Government of Enugu State, Igwe Chima Achiekwelu, has paid tribute to the late Senator Basil Okwu who was laid to rest in his country home Nkpokolo, Achi penultimate Wednesday.
The royal father noted thatÂ the late Senator was the last of the titans, who brought to fore the mandate of his people and served them meritoriously.
He also listed some of the achievements of the fallen hero, who as a Minister of Labour and Social Welfare in the First Republic brought relative industrial peace in the then Eastern Nigeria due to his policy of dialogue.
His achievements also included laying the foundation stone of the regional library, Enugu as aÂ Minister of Information in 1958, establisment ofÂ numerous community hospitals and health centres. And for his immediate constituency,Â he played a crucial role in the siting of following projects, tarring of Oji-River Awgu trunk A road, Achi pipe borne water scheme, Achi joint hospital, Corpus Christi College and the creation of Oji River Local Government AreaÂ in 1976.
He advised the new political office holders to emulate the good virtues of late Senator, especially in the areas of rendering selfless service to the society in order to move the nation forward.
The late Senator who was bestowed with the national honour of Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR), was also appreciated for his services to the old Awgu division and was honoured with the title of Ikenecheoha.
