MORE sports facility development experts have continued to arrive Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital on the invitation of the Local Organising Committee for the 2010 National Sports Festival, Rivers 2010.
Sports Vanguard gathered that the invitation of experts by the LOC which is chaired by the deputy Governor, Engineer Tele Ikuru was aimed at having them come to the state, inspect existing facilities and make recommendations to the government.
â€œThe government will then act on the recommendations of the experts with a view to upgrading the facilities to international standard,â€ the source said.
We further gathered that the sports-loving governor and chairman of the Presidential Task Force on Nigeriaâ€™s South Africa 2010 campaign, Rotimi Amechi, intends to lift the standard of sports facilities to enhance the stateâ€™s chances of hosting both national and international events.
â€œThe governor has directed the LOC to ensure all event venues are in the best shape that can qualify the state to host local and international sports events,â€ our source said, stressing that â€œhe is serious about it. This goes beyond the sports festival.â€
The latest group of experts that arrived Port Harcourt last weekend include Engineer Ignacio Mercado, whose speciality is track and field facilities, Enesto Romanus (indoor and outdoor courts) and Alfredo Eduardo(sports equipment). They are to inspect facilities in Port Harcourt for one week.
Earlier in October, the chief executive of Pear Priscine, Italy based swimming pool developers were in the Rivers State capital to inspect the swimming pool at the Civic Centre.
