SOME suspected political thugs yesterday dispossessed a policeman of his pistol as they engaged some policemen in a free-for-all over a minor disagreement.
The crisis left a supervisory councillor in Ibadan South West Local Government Area of the state, Mr. Kunle Sanusi, injured. He is now lying critically ill at the University College Hospital where he was transferred when the State-owned Adeoyo Hospital could not treat him.
During the face-off, the police patrol vehicle was reportedly vandalized, as well as some communication gadgets.
According to the State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Olabisi Okuwobi, men of the state police command who were on stop and search found some substance suspected to be Indian Hemp on the supervisory councillor. She said the councillor was on a motorcycle when policemen stopped him and demanded to know the contents of a cellophane bag he was carrying.
Though, Vanguard gathered that the councillor was allegedly shot by the policemen when he resisted arrest after the substance was allegedly found on him, which was promptly denied by the PPRO.
On why the man was taken to the hospital, she said maximum force was used when all initial gentlemanly approach employed by the policemen failed.
Instead of submitting himself for arrest, the policewoman said he attacked the policeman that confronted him, adding that the melee forced the policemen to call for reinforcement as some suspected political thugs stormed the scene and attacked the policemen.
