BENIN—THE Benin Forum, a socio-cultural organization and an umbrella body of all Binis in Nigeria and the diaspora, has commended President Umaru Yar’Adua for ensuring that due process was adhered to in the recent appointment of Professor Osayuki Godwin Oshodin as the new Vice-Chancellor of the University of Benin (UNIBEN).
This comes as the Benin National Congress (BNC), a socio-cultural organization, also hailed the emergence of Professor Oshodin as vice chancellor of UNIBEN, saying his emergence would help cement the relationship between the university and host community.
The Governing Council of the university had announced Professor Oshodin the Vice-Chancellor of the university last Monday.
In its reaction, the Benin Forum, through its chairman and Esogban of Benin Kingdom, Chief David Edebiri, dedicated Professor Oshodin’s emergence to the rule of law policy of President Yar’Adua which, according to him, enabled justice to prevail.
According to him, “we feel fulfilled. I feel great that at last our yearnings, our cries to the powers that be, have been answered.
“Not as if we were given the position as a gift, but transparent procedure was put in place which enabled our son to emerge as the authentic vice-chancellor.”
“We thank the president; we thank our father, the Oba of Benin, the governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, for the principled stand he took on this matter.
“We are very grateful. We have always maintained that we do not want anybody to show us sympathy, but that the proper procedure, transparent procedure, should be followed so that the proper person should emerge.
“That is exactly what the present council has done. We use this opportunity to pray for the quick recovery of our president because the reforms he has started must be continued.
“In the past, the Binis have been cheated by a cabal and that is why we have not been able to produce the vice-chancellor, even though the institution is on our soul. But today, the president made it possible and we thank him.â€
In a statement signed by the President of the BNC, Mr Aiyemenkhue Edokpolo, the group stated that the endorsement of Professor Oshodin as vice-chancellor of the University of Benin also translated to a renewed resolve to promote the support of the Binis to the security and general well being of the institution.
“We pledge our unflinching support to his administration. We are glad that the outcome of the exercise was thorough and devoid of any favoritism or malpractice. We urged him to redress the structures of injustice to the host communities,†the BNC stated.
