THE Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Mr. Ogbonna Onovo has said that his administration would uphold and give utmost respect to the inalienable rights of the citizens. To this end, the police helmsman said the human rights section of the force is being strengthened in line with the internationally acceptable standard.
Already, a monitoring unit has been created to check overzealous policemen who violate peoples rights.  Aside this, the police IG said his administration was committed to restoring the lost dignity of the Nigeria Police force maintaining that what the average police man needs was a conducive atmosphere within which to operate.
“In order to fulfill its obligations as the primary law enforcement institution in the country, the force under my leadership is focused on returning the Nigeria Police to its core values of discipline and professionalism which are fundamental to our main roles of crime prevention and maintenance of law and order.
“We have therefore put in place modality to strengthen the human rights section of the force with a view to aligning the activities of members of the force with international acceptable standard.
The force is emphasizing the importance of micro-accountability as a way of subjecting the conduct of police officers to the dictates of the rule of law. The impact of this awareness is being gradually felt.â€
Continuing, Onovo said, “To ensure strict adherence to this, I have established a special monitoring unit to checkmate the excess of overzealous and erring personnel.
And in acknowledging the dedication to the duty by the police personnel who work relentlessly in pursuit of the goals of maintaining law and order, I have given directive for the immediate payment of shift allowance to officers and men of the Nigeria police on monthly basis as a form of motivation for better performance..â€
