FEDERATION presidents are the real winners of the crisis that engulfed the Nigeria Olympic Committee, NOC, even as the three wise men, Alhaji Ibrahim Galadima, Rev. Moses Iloh and Chief Olatonkunbo Thomas, have quenched the fire that threatened the foundation of Nigerian Olympic family.
The federations before now have acted like ‘house-helps’ who obey their masters even to their detriment.
But the brouhaha in the house of the Olympic family opened the eyes of the presidents who rallied round to checkmate the ambitions of the very few who wanted to perpetuate themselves in office.
“The Federation presidents have shown that they are the real people who drive sports in Nigeria.
They demonstrated it to the fullest and are the ones who hold the ace in the NOC.
I think that Nigerian sports will be better for it the way the Federation presidents rose up to fight what would have ‘finished’ Nigerian sportsâ€, Solomon Ogba, President of Athletics Federation of Nigeria said.
Truly, the Federation presidents demonstrated a common love for sports when they held nocturnal meetings to resolve the NOC crisis.
“We are not going to stop brainstorming for the good of sports. I am happy with the positive reaction of my colleagues and it is a challenge for us to carry it further to change the fortune of Nigerian sports for the betterâ€, Patrick Ukah, President of Nigerian Hockey said moments after the decision to fast-track the NOC election to January.
“We are the main actors of Nigerian sports. We should be more involved other than playing second fiddle. I am happy that the trouble in NOC brought us closeâ€, Chief Jonathan Nnaji of Taekwondo Federation said. In all, most of the presidents played an active role not only to restore sanity in the NOC but also to bring meaningful change to sports in the country.
