Bothered by the influx of substandard goods from China into the country, the Nigerian Government and its Chinese counterpart are bill to sign an agreement in January which would check the dubious importation of fake and counterfeit goods and products into Nigeria from China.
This hint was dropped by the Chairman Board of Directors of the Standard Organization of Nigeria SON, Dr. Samuel Ortom while fielding questions from Vanguard in Makurdi.
Ortom who lamented that the importation of inferior and poor quality products into the country has continued to constitute a drain on the resources of the average Nigerian and that of the country emphasized that with the new agreement that would come into effect by January 2010 the menace of fake and counterfeit products being imported from China by Nigerian business men in connivance with their Chinese partners would be a thing of the past.
According to him, “the truth is that the substandard products that are being circulated in Nigerian markets are nothing but conduit pipes being used to draining the economy of Nigeria and Nigerians, any every Nigerian is affected by this. Take an example of most of the electric bulbs that are being sold in the markets today, the life span of most of them don’t go beyond three to four weeks when in actual sense they ought to have lasted at least two years, yet Nigerians keep buying large quantity of the product in just one yearâ€.
“And when we bitterly complained to the Chinese authorities they told us that it was some of the dubious Nigerian businessmen that connive with their own dubious manufacturers to produce fake items for export into Nigeria; they overt told us that they use high quality products in their own country†he said.
