The Nigeria Football Federation will be richer next year.Apart from the millions of dollars that they will rake in from Fifa as World Cup finalists, they hope to renew their sponsorship contract with telecommunication giants, Globacom. The contract ended early this month but Globacom has the First Right of Refusal and they are considering the request of the football federation to raise the stakes.
The sponsorship of the last contract was worth N150m. Recently, the football federation issued a statement after assessingtheir brands and said that the federation could earn N1 billion from their sponsors a year.
“There are possibilities that Globacom will pay more to the football federation,†a source close to the federation said, prompting a call to an officer of the telecommunication company who confirmed that there was renewed move for contract renewal.
Globacom sponsorship covered all the national teams. It is against this background that they would increase their sponsorship.
“Globacom will definitely raise the stakes,†a company source said, adding “Globacom is reviewing their sponsorship of Nigerian football and the football federation that runs all the national teams from the Eagles to the Olympic team to the Flying Eagles, Under 17, the Falcons and other female teams will definitely get more. The new contract that may be signed will be good for the football federation,†the source said.
