National Assembly may reject N158 billion FCT 2010 budget

Abuja-THE National Assembly may suspend consideration of the N158 billion budget proposal for the Federal Capital Territory for 2010 because of alleged acts of defiance by the minister, Senator Adamu Aliero.

Aliero, a former senator, has recently had a number of spats with the National Assembly culminating in the deputy president of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, describing his erection of road bumps on Abuja roads as an act of irresponsibility.

Besides the very unpopular road bumps which have remained against the directive of the National Assembly, Aliero has also dared the National Assembly on the issue of land charges which he refused to reverse despite the directive of the Senate and the House of Representatives Committees on FCT.

In the absence of an elected legislative council for the FCT, the National Assembly acts as the legislative body for the federal territory with the responsibility of approving the budgetary proposals of the FCT administration.

“I have never seen anywhere in the world where you put road bumps on the kind of expressways we have in Abuja and since he has refused to heed us we are going to teach him a lesson, as we are directing our committee on FCT not to consider his budget,” a principal officer in the Senate said, echoing the resentments expressed by Ekweremadu.

The deputy Senate president  had last month in a session with journalists in Abuja described the minister’s insistence in mounting the speed breakers as irresponsible. “If the government in Abuja is anxious about the safety of people, they should put speed cameras.

They can deploy people to monitor the speed of drivers and not putting those nasty bumps. It doesn’t look well in a city as Abuja. They should be removed. It seems so irresponsible,” he said.

The House of Representatives had before then passed a motion calling on the minister to remove the speed breakers but the motion was unheeded.

The speed breakers positioned in about nine city interjections have been condemned for their inconvenience to drivers. The areas where the bumps were mounted are interspersed with bolts allegedly from cars shaken by the bumps.
