BENIN—THE new Vice-Chancellor of the University of Benin, Professor Osayuki Oshodin, has declared that his emergence was the handiwork of God and the prayers of Benin elders and ancestors.
Oshodin, who is the first Bini son to occupy that position since the university was created 39 years ago, recalled events that led to his emergence and stressed the need for Bini to always speak with one voice in order to achieve the goals set out for them by God.
He spoke in Benin City when the Gia Da N’Edo Movement, a Benin socio-cultural organization, organized a luncheon party in his honour.
According to Professor Oshodin, “I think my emergence was the power of God and the prayers of Benin elders and our ancestors that helped me.
“The VC issue is a big lesson to all Bini people. What I believe is that when God and the ancestors said it is our turn, nobody could stop it.
“Our people must always learn to speak with one voice and we must always learn to support our sons and daughters who are qualified into positions.â€
Recalling how he rejected commissionership when he was approached on several occasions by the palace of the Oba of Benin, Professor Oshodin said “ I decided not to take such positions because I so much believe in the university community.
“There is no position I have not held in UNIBEN before I became the VC. I am eminently qualified for the job. My appointment was based on merit and I will do all I can to sanitize the system and bring back peace to the universityâ€.
Speaking at the occasion, former Chief whip of the senate, Senator Rowland Owie, lamented that the Binis had always been marginalized in the area of appointment due to what he described as the antics of Chief Tony Anenih who is an Esan man.
“Chief Anenih caused the problem we are having today and if not for him, the Binis would have known where we are today. And it is unfortunate that most times, he uses our people against us and that is why, henceforth, our ancestors will destroy anybody who wants to run down the Binis.
“At the age of over 80, one man will want to be dictating all that happens in the state, that nonsense must stop,†he asserted.
