By Gbenga Akanmu & Monsur Olowoopejo
Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State, yesterday, inaugurated a six-man visitation panel led by Justice Olaseinde Silva to investigate the crisis in the Lagos State University (LASU) .

Fashola in his speech thanked members of the committee for accepting to serve on the panel, noting  that it would provide a unique opportunity to keep the torch of the university alive and actualise the dreams of its founding fathers.

He said the visitation panel would serve as a mediation for all stakeholders in the school while expressing appreciation to the unions for accepting to resume work

Fashola, while reading the terms of reference for the panel said: “It was to review the students affairs policies and practices from the point of entry to graduation, including admission, students welfare, regular attendance in class, conduct of examination, maintenance of discipline, marking of scripts, release of results, record keeping, issuance of certificates and transcripts.

“Others are: Mobilisation of graduants for national youth service, determine how appointments and promotions are carried out,  staff welfare, whether discipline of university staff is conducted in compliance with the relevant laws and regulations.

“The panel is also to examine the state of facilities and manpower in the school and also to proffer appropriate solutions and make recommendations in the next six weeks to the government for action.”

Responding, Chairman of the Visitation Panel, Justice Silva, said the panel would do its best so that peace would return to the university.

He, however, said members of the panel were not magicians but that “whatever we do will be done with sincerity. We promise that we will deliver and make recommendations that will meet the expectation of the state government and all stakeholders in the state.”

Silva explained that he was speaking from experience because one of his sons was a student of LASU and could recount his experience at the institution.

According to him, the issue before LASU is an uphill task and an hurdle which must be crossed and they are prepared for it.

Other members of the panel are Prof. Itse Sagay, Mrs Victoria Ankra, Alhaja Lateefat Okunnu, Mrs Muri Okunola and Kaoli Olusanya.
