ENUGU—REPRIEVE came the way of the South East Regional Manager of Afribank Nigeria Plc, Enugu, Mr. Uba Anichebe, as the police rescued him from suspected kidnappers after spending four days in captivity.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, who confirmed the rescue of the banker, yesterday said the victim was freed following a raid on the kidnappers’ hideout at Amodu Awkunanaw in Nkanu West Local Government Area.
He said that the police swooped on the community following the confession by a member of the kidnap gang, David Yakubu from Langtang, Plateau State, who was arrested at Makurdi last Sunday while taking the banker’s car to the North for sale.
According to the PPRO, Yakubu made useful statements that gave the police a clue to the hideout of the kidnappers at Amodu Awkunanaw, which is few kilometers away from the state capital, adding that a member of the gang, who kept custody of the victim was arrested during the raid.
Amaraizu gave the name of the arrested middle-aged man as Udochukwu Nweke, a native of Amodu Awkunanaw. He said that the suspect is already helping the police in their investigations aimed at apprehending other fleeing members of the gang.
Anichebe was reportedly kidnapped from the Independence Layout, Enugu, last Saturday by a gang of kidnappers, who took him and his Honda car with plate number EF550 KRV to an unknown destination.
The police said the kidnappers between that Saturday and Sunday, demanded a ransom of N20 million for his release.
But luck ran out of them when the police in Benue State apprehended one of them at Makurdi with the victim’s car. He was later handed over to Enugu State Police Command, which continued with his interrogation until he confessed to the crime and subsequently led armed policemen to their hideout.
Anichebe has since reunited with his family in Enugu.
