*Ask Nigerians to embrace peace at Christmas
By Emmanuel Aziken & Daniel Idonor
ABUJA—The Vice-President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan and the National Chairman of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, Prince Vincent Ogbulafor
have called on Nigerians not to relent in prayers for the quick recovery of President Umaru Yar’Adua and also seize the opportunity of the Christmas season to rededicate themselves to the service of God and the country.
In a Christmas message to the nation, the Vice-President urged Nigerians to shun vain glory, but continue to delight in the indomitable Nigerian spirit and be agents of positive change.
In a statement signed by his Senior Special Assistant, Media and Publicity, Mr Ima Niboro, the Vice-President asked Christians to ponder on the significance of the birth of Christ, embrace spiritual rebirth and pray for the peace and stability of the nation.
VP urges more prayers for Yar’Adua
“This Christmas, my family and I join millions of Nigerians to celebrate Christ: the Wonderful Counsellor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, and the Prince of Peace. His birth is significant in so many ways, heralding hope for a world of fears and failures. By virtue of His birth and His supreme sacrifice of love on the cross, mankind is rescued from the pain of sin and death.
“If one man can so affect the whole world so positively, then we must resolve to be agents of positive change in every little corner of our great country. This Christmas, I urge all Christians to continue to reflect deeply on the life and times of Christ, and rededicate themselves to the peace He lived and died for.
“I seize this occasion to thank all Nigerians for the fervent prayers they have offered for the quick recovery of. President Yar’Adua. The prayers are having good effect, and I urge all not to relent.
“This Christmas provides us another opportunity to rededicate ourselves to the service of God, and to the progress of our great country Nigeria. I wish all Nigerians a merry Christmas and a happy New Year,†the statement noted.
Ogbulafor stresses on 7-point agenda
In his message, Ogbulafor noted that the seven-point agenda of the administration was the hope for the future and urged Nigerians to emulate the peaceful lifestyle of Jesus Christ and imbibe the significance of the celebrations.
He said: “As we celebrate Christmas, let us imbibe the significance of this momentous event which symbolises peace, love, self-sacrifice, and total reconciliation with God and humanity.â€
“As the head of humanity, Christ lived on this earth a perfect, consistent life, in conformity with the will of His Heavenly Father. As His followers, we are expected to emulate Him in words and action.â€
“Politically, this translates to peace and unity amongst the constituent units of this nation, tolerance and accommodation for fellow citizens, respect for leadership, and responsiveness for the governed.â€â€œFortunately, the Seven-Point Agenda and Vision 20:2020 of the Yar’Adua administration has given us hope for a better future. During this season, therefore, let me implore all Nigerians to pray fervently for the nation and President Umaru Yar’Adua.â€
