The Guaranty Trust (GT) Bank Lagos State Principals Cup 2009/10 which kicked off last week got to its zonal quarter final stage in some districts in the state. Eko Boys High school ,one of the oldest schools participating in this yearâ€™s championshipÂ was yesterday designated as one of the heritage sites for the GTBank Lagos Principals Cup.
The day was marked as a special day as one of the key members of the old boys association, Chief Idowu Sofola (SAN) was honoured as the chairman of the occasion.
Eko Boys High School, founded in 1913, hosted three key matches at the zonal quarter final stage in the Mushin zone. For females, the team that came fourth last year, Igbo_Owu community high school defeated Itire community high school by 2_1. The game however witnessed the outstanding brilliance of Mariam Olaobi of Itire Community High school.
The second match, which was the star match, saw the chairman of the day, Chief Idowu Sofola(SAN) do a ceremonial kick_off before the commencement of the match between home boys Eko Boys and Igbo_Owu Community High School.
The game lived up to its expected billing as the home school got all the expected support from students and teachers alike.
The game ended goalless after the referee controversially ruled out a goal scored by Eko Boys to send the tie to penalty shoot_out. However, Eko Boys came out victorious after their outstanding goalkeeper made two great saves to win the tie by 3 – 1.
The Most valuable player of the match, Tunde Badmus was presented with the match ball by GTBank officials at the end of the match.
However the sponsors spiced the rejuvenated Principals Cup withÂ the Players development program and the tournament ambassador programme.
The Players development programme will kick off at the end of the competition where outstanding players will be selected to go on a tour both locally and internationally for training and exposure.
The Tournament Ambassador Programme (TAP) is a motivational programme involves the gathering of GTBank staff who are alumni of some selected schools to lectures these students on career goals and objectives.
The Lagos State Principals Cup is the biggest secondary school football competition in Nigeria and is being sponsored by Guaranty Trust Bank for the next 3 years
