The Minister of the Federal Captital Territory and former Governor of Kebbi State, Adamu Aliero, has sent a strong delegation of Under-17 players to the on-going Akpabio Cup.
The team which arrived Uyo Monday night expressed happiness at the gesture of their former governor who they described as a lover of sports and the youths.
They said the governor bankrolled all the expenses they are to incure in Uyo for the duration of the championship and vowed to lift the trophy in appreciation for his kind gesture.
Speaking while recieving the team on arrival, the public relations officer of YSFON, Ben Ekpo, said he was elated with the news that a former governor still supports the activities of the youths of his state while he asked others who are well to do in the society to emulate Aliero’s meekness.
Already actions have commenced in the weeklong competition as draws had been conducted for particiating teams and as the days go by the chaff would be separeted from the wheat.
According to Ben Ekpo, the public relations officer of Youth Sports Federation of Nigeria (YSFON), organisers of the event, all logistics are in place for a successful competition which promises to produce future stars for national age grade teams.
He, however, called on the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to send coaches that would monitor the competition.
“ This competition is a flagship of all age grade competitions in the country and we are living no stone unturned in our efforts to replicate our qualities as no 1 youth sports organisation in th country.
If you remember that we single handedly producd the squad that lifted the first edition of world u_17 world championship and susequently contributed in no small measure at the last under 17 world cup success for Nigeria.
“We want to call on the NFF to send their coaches to this event as it would help them eliminate the troubles of age falsification.
I want to use this opportunity to counsel all participating team on the need to compete fairly because this competition is all about frienship.
It could be recalled that the 1st edition of the competition attracted teams from all parts of the country and Abuja.
The trophies in the two categories were won by Akwa ibom state boys and girls after beating Kano state and Cross River states respectively.
