Arewa Youth Development Group of Nigeria, AYDGN, has described the recent arrest and detention of the former Governor of Sokoto State, Alhaji Attahiru Bafarawa, by the Economic and Financial Crime Commission, EFCC, as undemocratic and a sign of political immaturity by the EFCC.
The group called for his unconditional release from detention.
In a statement signed by the National President of the Group, Dr. Rufai’I Yahaya Bungudu in Gusau after a two days conference organised by representa-tives of the group from 15 states, the group said, “Bafarawa’s arrest by the EFCC is untimely and it lacks political respect from the same people championing the Rule of Law and due process in Nigeria.
“EFCC, as the organ of the nation’s security agencies, are under siege by some politicians who are taking advantage of the absence of the President to unleash terror and injustice on perceived political enemies of the government.
“It is a surprise for any serious minded person from Sokoto, Kebbi or Zamfara state to accept Bafarawa as a corrupt leader, while those charged earlier by the same agency are moving around freely.
“We, therefore, call on the Sokoto State Governor, Aliyu Magatakrda Wamakko not to embark on a voyage of vende-tta against his opponents.â€
