ARMOURED personnel carriers, APCs,Â manned by fierce-looking soldiers, were deployed by the Army, yesterday, in Effurun, near Warri, Delta State following the upsurge in criminal activities in the area with Christmas just five days away.
At about 5.00 a.m. , yesterday, a group of bandits laid ambush for commuters, including journalists at the Effurun roundabout and robbed them of their possessions.
Two APCs were sighted at the scene yesterday evening by Sunday Vanguard. The policeÂ also beefed up security in the area.
A robber, who trailed a man that withdrew N150,000 from a bank, near Aiport Road junction, Effurun, two days ago, and snatched the bag containing the moneyÂ was, however, not lucky, as he was shotÂ by soldiers who were on guard at a nearby location. Passers-by gathered to catch a glimpse of the young man, who, seconds earlier, was alive and bubbling, only to be found in a pool of his blood the next minute.
At Sokoh Estate Road and Okubor junction area in Effurun, said to be strongholds ofÂ car snatchers, the police mounted checkpoints and patrolled the areaÂ on Friday evening.
