FORMER Bayelsa State governor, Chief D.S.P. Alamieyeseigha, has asked Nigerians to rally round President Umaru Yar’Adua and pray for his quick recovery.
“It is a fact that the president of our dear country is being treated in Saudi Arabia for heart and kidney related ailment. We owe our nation a patriotic duty to pray for the president’s recovery. This ought to be paramount in our minds now, not trivialities bordering in his seeking re-election or calls for his resignationâ€, Alamieyeseigha said in a statement yesterday.
Saying it is premature to speak or act in haste when the details of his ailments are not very clear, the former governor said: “As patriots, we should rally round the president to ensure the realization of his ideals for our countryâ€.
He went on: “This also brings to fore calls by some persons with sinister motives for the vice president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to resign from office. It is as absurd as it is illogical.
First and foremost, the vice president since his assumption has proved himself capable and competent to the office he administers. He is an effective team player who has both practical and intellectual capabilities to pilot the affairs of the Nigerian state.
He has distinguished himself as a public service, administrator, governor and even as vice president and has not been found wanting. What then constitutes the basis for the call for his resignation if not to incite tension and hostility in the body polity? What does Nigeria stand to benefit from this unpatriotic motive?â€
