UYO — The Minister for Power and Steel, Dr. Lanre Babalola, has commended Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State for being the first ever in the history of the country to actualise the power dream of making electricity available within every five kilometres radius.
He made the assertion while on inspection of the state’s power project, which has added 100MW to the national grid.
Babalola, who noted that there was substantial improvement in the power sector, told newsmen that after inspecting the Indepen-dent Power Plant built by Akwa Ibom State govern-ment, that generation of electricity would not be adequate for the whole country but that with the passage of time, dependence on generator and other alternatives to power would drastically reduce.
The Minister challenged other state governors to emulate Chief Akpabio and take advantage of the liberalisation and Public Private Agreement policy of the Yar’Adua’s government to go into the area of power generation.
He disclosed that with the additional 100 megawatts fired by Akwa Ibom State Government for Eket, Ikot Abasi and Uyo, the Federal Government will increase its power generation to 5500Mw capacity.
Power generation the Hon. Minister noted has been seriously hampered by the claims for compensation made by communities on the right of way and that it was unreasonable for the government pay out so much to provide such amenity to the people.
He promised to set up a one-stop team to look into the issue of Public Private Agreement since according to him all bottlenecks would be resolved once the basic guarantees are and ensured.
