‘Eagles may not fly in Angola’

Former NFA board member Elder Bode Oyewole has his fears for the Super Eagles. The former Shooting Stars Sports Club boss believes Shaibu Amodu has a collection of players who might not do justice to Nigeria’s quest of lifting the 2010 Nation’s Cup billed for Angola next month.

Elder Oyewole said some of the players invited are players who are not 100 per cent  fit and most times do not feature for their clubs but still wondered why  the same set of players are listed for the Nation’s Cup.

He  recalled their unimpressive  display during the qualifying series and said time has come for the coach to do some clean up in the team.

He queried, why  Amodu still features same old players in the team when there is a rich pool of talented players who are hungry for honour and dying to play for their father land.

“Oh yes we  have a team (he laughed), especially now that Amodu  has released his list of invited players. This is the same players that displayed poorly during the qualifiers. I don’t think we have a team that can be compared to the ‘94 squad.

“Again one thing we have not gotten right is the  neglect of home-based players. I don’t see  why we want our indigenous coach to remain as the head coach of the team why our home-based players are relegated to the background. We should eradicate the idea of winning in every competition and see how we can  develop our home-based players with competitions like this.

“This is the time to feature them in the competition and not players who are bench warmers in their clubs in Europe. Apart from Osaze, most of these players are reserves. Take  for example, Nwankwo Kanu only plays for 10 minutes with his club.  Seyi Olofinjana is not doing well in his club.

Everton manager, David Moyes on Monday said that Yakubu Ayegbeni is not fit for the Nation’s Cup and yet he was invited  for the competition,” Oyewole said.

He however, believes if the  Eagles succeed in the preliminary stage, they would make it to the final of the competition.

“If you ask me, the team is unpredictable, and as a patriotic Nigerian, I want the Eagles to get to the final, if they are able to succeed in the early round, victory is theirs at the end,” he concluded.
