2010: Nigeria’s qualification, a miracle – Ngerem

By Philips  Adefioye

Nigeria’s tortuous   qualification to the 2010 World Cup has been described as a miracle by former President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, AFN, Dan Ngerem.

Ngerem told Saturday Vanguard sports in an interview that the qualification wasn’t based on the team’s performance but by the grace of God.

“This is the hand of God, it wasn’t based on our performance. If you look at the whole show from the beginning to the end of the qualification, I can tell you that nobody ever thought the Super Eagles could pick the sole ticket in our group. But God’s way is different from man,”he said.

Concerning the issue of the chief coach of the Eagles, Shaibu Amodu, whether he should be sacked or not, Ngerem said it was premature for the country to be calling for the coach’s head after delivering the ticket as he promised.

The football enthusiast said what the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, and the National Sports Commission, NSC, should do was to form around Amodu, a sound technical team to give advice and encourage him to step up the team’s game before the Africa Cup of Nations which is fast approaching.

“What the NFF should do is to form around Amodu the best technical hands to support him because it will be very premature to start talking about a replacement for him. He has qualified the country twice for the World Cup and this time around if he is denied of his right, it will be very unfair.

“I’m not saying that they should not hire a technical adviser to be in the team but Amodu should not be left out of the team for the Mundial.”

Ngerem therefore, advised the NFF and the NSC to bring out the plan for the World Cup and allow Nigerians to do a critic on it, pointing out that through this, prosperity will abound when the World Cup commences.

“ Let the NFF and the NSC bring out the plans for the World Cup. This time around, we want to see the plans in order to do a critic on it so that the Eagles will not just be ordinary participants. Like I said in the beginning, our qualification to the 2010 World Cup  was a miracle but that does not mean we should not do our home work.

We like to depend on miracles, but let us remember that World Cup is a different business entirely. There is nothing like let us pray that other countries should fail for Nigeria to qualify in our group,”said Ngerem
