UGHELLI—Delta State House of Assembly has said the suspension of the Chairman of Ika South local government council, Mr. Hilary Ibudeh, from office was constitutional.

This was contained in a GSM text message toVanguard yesterday by the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker of the House, Mr. Frank Whyte Osabohien, in reaction to recent media reports.

It read:   “The attention of the leadership of the State House of Assembly has been drawn to unguided remarks and misleading opinions on the suspension of the Chairman of Ika South, Mr. Hilary Ibudeh, over the allegations of financial impropriety.

“The truth is that the House acted pursuant to sections 128 and 129 of the 1999 constitution which empowers State Houses of Assembly to oversee the affairs of local governments in the country.

“It, therefore, follows that Delta State House of Assembly acted within the confines of the constitution in suspending the said chairman.

“Besides, he was indicted by the Auditors-General of the State and Local Governments over the allegations of financial impropriety.

“It, therefore, follows that the action of the House is sequel to the findings of the two independent team of audit panels. Suffice it to say that the House has acted constitutionally.

“It is unfortunate that people who should know the position of the constitution on certain issues are ignorant or feigned to be so for mischievous reasons. Sentiments should be avoided in reactions to such topical issues.”
