Sudan to host possible play-off between Algeria, Egypt

A play-off match will be held in Sudan on November 18 in the event that Egypt and Algeria cannot be separated at the top of Group C in the African zone after this weekend’s game. That eventuality depends on the outcome of their meeting this Saturday in Cairo.

Algeria currently lead the section by three points but should the Egyptians prevail by a two_goal margin in the final game in the group, the sides will be level on points, goal difference, goals scored and head_to_head record.

With just such a possibility in mind, and in the interests of fair play, FIFA held a draw at its Zurich HQ on Wednesday to decide the venue of the hypothetical decider, according to a report on its official website.

Algeria chose neighbouring Tunisia as their preferred location and Egypt opted for Sudan, with FIFA General Secretary Jerome Valcke settling the matter by drawing the latter option out of the hat.

All eyes will now be on Saturday’s crunch clash in the Egyptian capital to see if a final showdown will be required to separate the two teams.
