Senate pledges good treatment for Uwais’ report

Abuja—The Senate will consider seriously some recommendations of the Justice Mohammed Uwais-led Electoral Reform Committee (ERC), the Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, said yesterday.

Senator Ekweremadu, in an interactive session with the Network of NGOs in the country, however, affirmed that the recommendations of ERC would not be treated as sacrosanct by the Senate Committee on Constitution Review.

“That report, as good as it is, is not sacrosant. It is going to be considered along with other reports and suggestions.

”It will be given the best treatment in line with the best practices in the world. If we find part or all of it fit for adoption, we will do so,” Ekweremadu, who is chairman of the committee on constitution review stressed.

Giving the direction of the committee, he said: “After the zonal public hearing on December 14-15, we are going to break into sub-committees to discuss issues that may crop up from these hearings and come up with a position to be
presented to the Senate. And, we will work with our colleagues in the House of Representatives.”
