Senate not ready to replace Omisore
By Emmanuel Aziken
Abuja—The Senate is in no hurry to replace former Senator Iyiola Omisore as chairman of its Committee on Appropriation dashing the expectations of a reconstitution of the 53 Senate standing and special committees, it emerged yesterday.
Reliable Senate sources said Senator Ahmed Maccido, the Vice-Chairman of the Committee on Appropriation, is expected to take over pending the re-election for Omisore’s Osun East Senatorial District.
Omisore’s election was nullified by the Court of Appeal in Ibadan, Oyo State, last Wednesday. It subsequently ordered a fresh election within 60 days.
The removal of Omisore was expected to create a vacuum that could have inspired the long-expected reconstitution of the Senate committees. Omisore had been the target of a subtle campaign by most senators who accused him of inefficiency, among other allegations.
However, no conclusive evidence was produced against him in the closed door sessions last year where some senators reportedly rehashed the allegations. Omisore, it was learnt, was helped by his unflinching sense of loyalty to the Senate leadership.
