Oshiomhole canvasses support for Yar’Adua’s govt

By Simon Ebegbulem
BENIN—GOVERNOR Adams Oshiomhole of Edo state has urged Nigerians to support  President Umaru Yar’Adua’s administration to enable him continue to preside over a united democratic Nigeria.

He said that for Nigeria to make progress, “we must know where to quarrel, we must know where to disagree and we must also know where to cooperate.

“When national interest is at stake, political differences must give way to those things that will unite our country.”

He added that the people of the state had celebrated the end of godfatherism and urged the former Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees to go to Anambra State to continue his alleged political maneuvers or be disgraced out of politics.

Oshiomhole, who spoke weekend when six Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) local government council chairmen and other top leaders of the party defected to Action Congress (AC) at a rally tagged “operation earthquake,” held at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, stressed the need for internal democracy to reign supreme in the national electoral process.

According to him, “it is true that we are in opposition at the federal level, but we are in loyal opposition.
“I like all of you to pray for our president, for God to give him long life and wisdom to preside over a united democratic Nigeria.

“Where we need to collaborate with the Federal Government for the good of our country, this government, under my stewardship, will cooperate with President Yar’Adua for Nigeria to move forward.

“Henceforth in Edo State, it must be one man, one vote. I want to assure that with the support we are getting from the people of Edo State, we have the confidence that we will get the changes we need to reposition our state and make it a beautiful state.

“We have started and I am happy that Edo people are celebrating and supporting us. One with God cannot be afraid.”

Taking a swipe at Chief Anenih and the PDP, Oshiomhole narrated that last week, “they went to NTA Pavillion and they said they were installing a chairman. Did you ask the question, where was the election held?

“He was elected at the bedroom of the former godfather right there in Uromi. If Nigeria’s democracy must grow, the starting point is internal democracy.

“A man who will not allow members of his party to elect the chairman of the party, will such a person submit to the rules of INEC?”

So when we said we are celebrating the end of godfatherism, we are actually celebrating the end of genuine and open democracy.

“But the good news for the godfather is that there are still some kind of places where rigging is still in vogue. So we are ready to banish him to Anambra State, godfathers who have found Edo state too hot for them to stay. In Edo state, their days are over,” he declared.
