The Nigeria Computer Society has announced plans to hold her first national IT merit award to deserving individuals and organizations in the country.
Announcing this in Lagos, the National president of the association, Professor Charles Uwadia said â€œas a result of the nationalÂ need to reward excellence with honour, the Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) decided to conduct a national IT merit award to deserving organizations, individuals and corporate bodies to lend credence to professionalism.
According to him, this was to guide against a situation where certificate of computer excellence were awarded to individuals, corporate nongovernmentalÂ organizations and other eminent Nigeria without recourse to NCS, the umbrella organization of all computer professionals in Nigeria.
â€œIt is our determination in the NCS to carry this award out now and for the first time to also conduct a public survey by requesting Nigerians at home and in diaspora to vote via the SMS and provide an unbiased verdict on who, or which individual, or organization best deserves to be honoured.
I wish to state that NCS as an objective society has decided to allow the selection process to be IT driven by opinion poll through the medium of SMS, Newspaper and NCS website ,â€ he said..
The award which comes under seven categories according the NCS President will feature: computer organization of the year; software provider in human resources services of the year; IT driven bank of the year; the payment solution provider of the year; best IT media reporter of the year; best IT Airline of the year and best telecoms company of the year.
According to him, sponsors of the programmeÂ will be rewarded in the three categories ofÂ Gold, Silver and Bronze. For instance,Â the Gold sponsor of N5 million he said theÂ organizationâ€™s logo shall be on NCS website for 12 months, all members in Nigeria and in the diaspora will patronize theÂ Â organization and the companyâ€™s logo shall feature in the NCS conference proceedings and for Silver sponsor of N3. 5 million, the organizationâ€™s logo shall be on NCS website for eight months, as well as other benefits as in Gold, while on the bronze sponsor of N2. 5 million, he also said that the companyâ€™s logo shall be on NCS website for five months, including other benefits accruable in Gold and Silver.
To give credence to the transparence of the exercise, the President said that the selection of the first set of awardees would be guided by professionals while the final stage will be left to the members of the public to decide through SMS at the cost of N50 per SMS.
â€œWeÂ have limited pool of awardees, and we can assure you that the exercise will be guided by a professional selection of awardees. The bottom line for the SMS will be N50 and the voting public will be guided by our well thought out plans.â€ he added.
In his own contribution, a consultant to NCS, Alexander Ofuonyeadi said â€œsponsorship does not guarantee winning a slot in the programme. HeÂ insisted that the whole exercise will be professionally carried out through survey and voting procedure, stressing that IT and telecommunication remain the life wire of human existence.
UwadiaÂ therefore assured that the programme will receive the desired expansion andÂ major boostÂ in future editions.
