PORT HARCOURT — MOBIL Producing Nigeria has donated a fully equipped library complex worth N17 million to Government Secondary School, Onne, Eleme in Rivers State.
Making the presentation, Executive Director of the company, Mrs. Gloria Essien Danner, described the project as one of the modest contribu-tions of the firm to the growth of education in the state and Niger Delta.
She lamented the dearth of libraries in secondary schools, noting that in the past, it was not the case as virtually all secondary schools had functional libraries for students and teachers, a situation she noted enhanced reading culture in schools.
Danner, who was represented by the Superintendent, Mobil Shore Base, Onne, Captain Ezekiel Agaba, said the library complex has offices, conveniences, computer set for the school librarian, a 5KVA generating set, reading sections and shelves stocked with 950 text books in different subjects.
Urging Onne community to assist the school in protecting the library complex, she urged students and teachers to make good use of the library.
“We cannot over-emphasise the importance of reading. Reading transports a person from a location to other parts of the world without leaving that location.
“It gives one new ideas and ways to solving everyday challenges. It also makes one a better person. Reading drives away ignorance which impedes human progress,†she said.
