Lease of dams : Oni seeks monarchs’ assistance

By Gbenga Ariyibi

ADO-EKITI—Ekiti State Governor, Engr Segun, has sought the assistance of the state’s monarchs over a move by his administration to lease out three dams in the state to private investors. The three dams to be leased to private investors are Ureje, Ero and Itapaji  dams.

Speaking during an interactive session with traditional rulers in Ado-Ekiti, the governor assured the Obas that the initiative would improve water supply through public-private-participation in water production.

The governor noted that government had no intention to sell the water production facilities or concede the whole process to private investors.

Oni posited that the state was blessed with abundant surface water  and said the new initiative would reduce cost and improve efficiency in the water sector.

The investors, according to him, would be basically responsible for production of water at facilities and dams across the State while the State Water Corporation would be saddled with the responsibility of quality control, collection of revenue and proper distribution of water to the people.

He noted that Government was taking the concession option to optimize water production from the existing plants, attract investments and produce enough water for the use of the people of the state.
