Jonathan tasks energy investors on capacity building

By Daniel Idonor

ABUJA — VICE President Goodluck Jonathan has urged foreign investors willing to partner with the Federal Government on improving the power sector to pay attention to capacity building for local operators as they introduce modern technology to the sector.

He stated this when he received a delegation of the Nordic-Nigeria Power Initiative led by Mr. Anders Stahl of the Swedish International Energy Systems on a courtesy visit to his office.

Jonathan said as foreign investors take advantage of investment opportunities that abound in the power sector, they should also concentrate on capacity building for local operators so they could effectively manage the infrastructure that would come on board. “We want capacity building for our own operators so they can effectively manage the power stations,” he said.

The vice president said the power sector was in a transitional phase and assured of government’s willingness to partner with foreign investors to improve the power situation, stressing: “This is the best time for the private sector to come in.”

He thanked the delegation for visiting and urged them to explore opportunities in the power sector particularly in the areas of transmission and distribution.

Stahl said his delegation of energy experts from the Nordic countries was in Nigeria to appraise the power situation, adding that they have gone through the generation and distribution systems in the country which he noted were obsolete.

According to him, the entire system requires the introduction of modern technology to upgrade output capacity of the various power stations as well as ensure their proper maintenance.

He said his team had assisted several African countries in upgrading their power sectors particularly in providing new transmission lines and assured that they would play a bigger role in Nigeria.
