Former chairman of Gombe State Football Association, Alhaji Shuaibu Ahmed Gara Gombe says that the Local Organizing Committee for the FIFA U-17 World Cup has failed the country because of the lack of transparency in all its affairs.
Gombe, in an exclusive interview with Saturday Vanguard sports said that President Umaru Yar’Adua should therefore institute a probe of the LOC, pointing out that a lot of things were not done the right way.
He added that FIFA also should query its vice president, Jack Warner because he believes Warner compromised for him to have allowed some stadia which did not meet with FIFA standard to be used for the competition and declared them ready.
“I must tell you that Warner has failed, he has compromised. FIFA should not send him to Nigeria again to oversee any thing like competition in the future. He knew that the country was not ready for the championship.
The Federal government as well as the hosting states and Delta State that was dropped, spent more than N40 billion on this U-17 World Cup which is regarded as a secondary school championship. Some facilities ordered for by the LOC for the championship are not yet seen, so what have they used all the billions of naira to do when it is not a senior World Cup.
President Yar’Adua should ask for returns of the huge amount invested on this championship, the LOC should be probed because a lot of things are so awkward. They shared the contract among themselves and I can tell you that a former NFA secretary general is a consultant to the LOC, why is he the consultant? Someone who is in the Sports Ministry, that shows that there is something wrong in the planing.
Dr Patrick Ekeji, the Director General of the National Sports Commission does not know what is going in the LOC. Amos Adamu is still operating underground with his cronies, the sports minister Sani Ndanusa has also compromised, he has joined them, he has betrayed the trust of Nigerians who supported his post as sports Minister based on his sports back ground.â€
Gombe blamed the Sports Minister for not cautioning the Chief Executive Officer of the LOC, stressing that nobody can probe them because seventy percent of the World Cup contract was allegedly hijacked by the Federal Government.
“I would like Mr President to get the Anti-Corruption Agencies to be on standby to probe after the championship .He should get all the security agencies to start checking out the airports and the boarders in order for them not to run away. A lot of people should be probed in the LOC,â€Â Gombe said.
